Hayfield Completes Perfect Season with 7-4 Win Over New York Mills

Hayfield completed a perfect high school baseball season with a 7-4 victory over New York Mills on Friday in the Class A Championship game at Target Field in downtown Minneapolis.  The Vikings finish at 26-0, while the Eagles end up with a 23-3 record.

 

New York Mills jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Abe Carlson and Dre Roberts started the inning with back-to-back singles and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Brayden EhnertLucas Grabow was inserted into the lineup as a pinch-runner for Roberts.  Will Oaks singled to drive in Carlson, with Grabow advancing to third base.  Grabow then scored on an infield single by Cade Rudolph with Oaks moving to second base.  A ground out by Jace Rudolph moved the runners to second a third and Brenn Salo then drove in both runners with a base hit.

Hayfield got two runs back in the top of the third on RBI singles by Karver Heydt and Lucas Hansen.  The Vikings then took the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth.  A throwing error and a walk started the inning, followed by a bunt single to load the bases.  Isaiah Tempel then drove in a run with a base hit.  Erik Bungum delivered a bases clearing double to give the Vikings their first lead of the game.  Hayfield added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a triple by Easton Fritcher and a sacrifice fly by Joey Tempel.

The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out, but they came up empty.  Hayfield also left the sacks jammed in the top of the seventh.  Nolan Klocke (1.2IP, 2H, 1BB, 2K) put the Eagles down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to get the save.  The win went to Fritcher (5.1IP, 7H, 4R, 4ER, 5BB, 7K).  Bungum (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI), Hansen (3-4, RBI, R), Fritcher (2-5, 3B, R), Ethan Slaathaug (2-4, R) and Isaiah Tempel (1-3, RBI, R, BB) were the offensive leaders for the Vikings.

New York Mills was led by Carlson (2-4, R), Salo (1-4, 2RBI) and Oaks (1-2, RBI, R).  The loss went to Roberts (5.1IP, 9H, 7R, 6ER, 3BB, 7K).
