Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 will play in the third place game of the Wahpeton Baseball Tournament at 1:00pm Sunday.  Post 30 lost their first round game on Friday to the host Wahpeton team, 13-5, but bounced back with a pair of wins on Saturday, beating Fargo Post 400, 7-5, and recording an 8-1 win over Clark Will Lake from South Dakota.

“We had five different pitcher throw against Wahpeton on Friday and we struggled in the field as well,” reported Head Coach Trevor Larson of Post 30.

Ethan Gronwold (5.2IP, 5R, 3ER, 2BB, 4K) picked up the win against Fargo with Carter Thielke pitching the final inning-and-a-third, striking out 3 batters to earn the save.  Leading hitters were Thielke (2-3, HR), Colin Becker (1-4, 2B, RBI) and Michael DeBrito (2-3, RBI).

Fargo led 5-3 until the fifth inning when Fergus Falls took the lead for good with 3 runs off 4 hits and 2 walks.  Post 30 added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-5.  Post 400 would not go quietly in the seventh as the first two batters reached on sharp singles.  Thielke then clamped down, getting the first out on a sacrifice bunt and then struck out the 3 and 4 batters to preserve the win.

Post 30 received a strong pitching performance from Bo Bring (7IP, 4H, 1R, 0ER, 2BB, 8K) as he fired a complete game against the Clark Willow Lake Senators.  Thielke (2-3, 2RBI), Andrew Johnson (3-4, RBI) and DeBrito (1-2, RBI) led the way at the plate.

Post 30 opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, putting up 5 runs on 5 hits and one error.  They added a pair of runs in the fourth to make it a 7-0 score.

“What a fun day of baseball,” exclaimed Coach Larson.  “We received good starting pitching in both games.  Gronwold and Bring both threw strikes and pitched deep into their ballgames.  Thielke did a great job of coming in and slamming the door.  Aric Heacox was an animal behind the plate as he put on a clinic defensively and did a great job handling the very young pitching staff.  We played very good defense most of the day.  Coupled with good pitching and timely hitting and you have a day like we had today.”
