The Fergus Falls Hurricanes won their opening game of the Mike Johnson Memorial Tournament in Morris on Friday night, recording a 10-0 victory over the Starbuck Stars in six innings. Winning pitcher Mitch Porter (6IP, 11K, 4BB, 2H) improved his season record to 3-0.
Fergus Falls struck quickly, scoring twice in the top of the first. Alex Hensch singled to lead things off, moved to third on a Tosten Mann single and scored on an errant pick-off attempt which also advanced Mann to second bases. Darin Stanislawski brought Mann home with a base hit.
The Canes added a run in the second with two outs as Carter Thielke singled and took second on a wild pitch and then scored on a single by Hensch. In the third Mann reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error. He came around to score the fourth run of the game on a pair of wild pitches.
Fergus Falls added 3 runs in the fifth. With one out Mann singled and Stanislawski drew a walk. Porter delivered an RBI single to score Mann and a double by Pete Gaustad scored Stanislawski and Porter. Three more runs were added in the sixth as Thielke, Hensch and Jake Anderson each singled to load the bases. A single by Mann scored two runners and a sacrifice fly by Porter brought home the third.
Hensch (3-4, 2R, RBI), Mann (4-4, 3R, 2 RBI) and Thielke (2-3, 2R) were the offensive leaders for Fergus Falls.
The Canes advance in the winners bracket to play at game at 6:30pm Saturday against the winner of the game between the Moorhead Mudcats and the Eagle Lake Expos.
