After losing the first game by the ten run rule in 5 innings to Breckenridge, 13-3, the Pelican Rapids Vikings came back to win the nightcap 6-3 behind strong pitching performances by Luke Sjolie and Weston Funk.

In the 1st game, the Cowboys scored in every inning as they built a 5-2 lead after 3 before putting the game away with 5 runs in the 4th and 3 more in the 5th.  In the 2nd inning, Pelican scored on a couple of walks, Logan Fahje’s single and a Breck error.  The Vikings 3rd run came in the 4th on doubles by Weston Funk and McHale Korf.  Luke Sjolie had the other hit for Pelican.  Funk started on the mound for the Vikings and was the victim of some sloppy defense behind him as only one of the 9 runs he gave up was earned.  The Vikings committed 7 errors in the game.  Fahje relieved Funk in the 4th.

Pelican turned it around in the 2nd game with a much better game defensively.  McHale Korf in center field, made two exceptional catches on deep fly balls, back to back in the 5th inning with 2 runners on, and Timmy Guler at 3rd base made an excellent play on a ground ball to his left, getting an out.  He also had 2 doubles on the day.  In another positive, 9th grader Ethan Sjostrom, making his first varsity start as catcher, did a nice job behind the plate.

The Vikings scored 4 in the first on 2 walks, a Logan Fahje single and 3 Cowboy errors. Breck got one back in the bottom of the inning but the Vikings maintained their 4 run lead with consecutive doubles by Korf and Carson McNeal.  Korf drove in another run in the 3rd with a base hit that scored Peyton Blakeway, who had reached on an error.  Breck finished the scoring for the game with 2 in the bottom of the inning on 3 hits before starting pitcher, Luke Sjolie retired the side on a strikeout.  Sjolie was relieved by Blakeway in the 6th because he had reached the 105 pitch limit. The Cowboys loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 7th before Weston Funk entered and retired the next 3 hitters to preserve the 6-3 win.

“It was nice to get a win after the way we played in the first game,” commented Pelican Rapids Assistant Coach Steve Babb.  “Luke didn’t have his best stuff today but he gutted it out and improved his record to 5-1.  Funk also did a great job of shutting down the 7th inning threat, getting the save.”
