The M State baseball team recorded a pair of vctories over Northland Community College on Wednesday afternoon, winning 7-6 and 5-2.

The Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one on an RBI double from Dane Schwirtz and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Justin Dykhoff.  Northland got a run back in the top of the second, but Austin Oetter made it a 3-1 game with a solo homer leading off the bottom of the second inning.  The Pioneers responded with three runs in the top of the third to jump ahead 4-3, however, the Spartans took advantage of three walks in the bottom of the inning to bring the tying run across the plate.  M State got the lead back in the fourth when Isaiah Sykora reached on an error and came around to score on a base hit by Schwirtz.  A walk to Dykhoff was followed by a homer from Christian Norby, giving the Spartans a 7-4 advantage.  Northland scored two in the top of the seventh, but the Spartans held on for the win.

In the second game, the Spartans got a lead-off double from Kyle Doup in the first inning and he came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Justin Dykhoff.  Austin Oetter led off the second inning with a home run for the second run of the game.  With the game even at 2-2, M State pushed across three runs in the sixth.  Back-to-back singles by Dane Schwirtz and Dykhoff got the inning started and a one-out walk to Oetter filled the bases.  After a pop out, Schwirtz scored when Ty Kargar was hit by a pitch.  Isaiah Sykora then delivered a two-run single to make it a 5-2 game.

Landry Knight really threw well and the offense was dialed in for game one,” said Head Coach Grant Harding of M State.  “I thought we played great defense all day,” noted Coach Harding. “We continued to put good at bats together. Austin Oetter had two big home runs on the day and really had a good approach at the plate.”
