Spartans Win Twice in Brainerd

The M State baseball team traveled to Brainerd and brought home a pair of wins on Saturday, beating Central Lakes by scores of 5-2 and 6-4.

The Spartans made a 5-run third inning stand up in game one of the MCAC double header.  A grand slam by Justin Dykhoff highlighted the inning.  Kyle Doup drove in the other run with a base hit.  Will Hoernemann threw a complete game to earn the win, striking out five, walking two and allowing nine hits.  Central Lakes was led at the plate by Gunnar Wicklund who had 3 hits in 3 at bats, scoring one of their two runs.  Jake Kapphahn and Adam Braun knocked in the runs for the Raiders.

Will threw great, the defense was awesome with zero errors, and Justin had a huge grand slam,” stated Head Coach Grant Harding. “Kids really played with passion and it was a great day.”

Dykhoff went the distance in game two, striking out four, walking three and allowing 3 earned run on 8 hits.  He also had a single, a double and two runs batted in.  Isaiah Sykora delivered a 2-run single, Wyatt Hamann drove in a run with a base hit and also scored.  Kyle Doup scored a pair of runs for the Spartans.  Wicklund (1-3, HR, SF, 4 RBI, R), Kapphahn (2-3, R) and Jack Suska (1-4, 2R) led the offensive attack for the Raiders.

“Justin pitched great and we had some timely hitting in game two,” said Harding.

The double header that was scheduled for Sunday in Fergus Falls has been postponed to next Saturday.
