Spartan Baseball Team Splits Two Games at Rainy River

The M State baseball team traveled to International Falls on Wednesday for a double header with Rainy River.  The Voyageurs dominated game one, posting a 10-0 victory over the Spartans.  M State gained a split with a 9-8 win in the second game.

 

Teigen Moritz had a double and Dane Schwirtz and Justin Dykhoff each had a single as the Spartans managed just 3 hits against Antonio Garcia and Mateo Sierras who combined on a shutout in the first game.  John Michael Gonzalez Jr. (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI) and Orlando Rodriguez (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, R) were the hitting leaders for Rainy River.  John Hudson had 3 hits in 3 at bats, driving in a run and scoring a run.

In game two, M State broke a 4-4 tie with five runs in the fifth inning and then held on for the one run victory.  Landry Knight (4IP, 3H, 4R, 3ER, 4BB, 3K) was the winning pitcher for the Spartans.  Christian Norby blasted a two-run homer, Tyler Wapola delivered a 2-run double and Schwirtz drove in two runs also.  Isaiah Sykora and Kyle Doup each scored twice.  Rainy River was led at the plate by Jean Carlos Rivera (2-4, 3B, 2 RBI, R), Kenyata Diamond (2-4, 2R) and Antonio Garcia (2-3, SF, RBI).

"I thought we really showed some resolve  by coming back and winning the second game . Christian Norby  had a big home run  that got the momentum back our way," said M State Head Coach Grant Harding

M State will host a double header against Itasca Community College beginning at 1:00pm Thursday in Fergus Falls.
