Svea Smestad started the meet off with a school record, first place of 38-3 in the Shot Put.  The record was held by Sharon Kunz-Casey set in 1982.  “For Svea to break this record in the first meet of the season after a year off due to COVID restrictions, in tough cold weather conditions is very encouraging,” said Welde.  “Sharon was an amazing Track and Field athlete in Fergus Falls, and in the State of MN, breaking this record is no small feat.  I am so excited to see how far Svea's hard work will bring her this season yet.”  

Ainsley Hansen Won the High Jump with a personal best of 5-5.  “Again in tough conditions,” noted Welde.  “She actually jumped at 5-6.5 inches to challenge Sharon Kunz-Casey's High Jump record.  Those attempts were all within range of hopefully meeting that challenge in the near future.”  

Emily Nuss had an excellent night by showing her strength as an athlete on the track and in the field in 4 strong events, placing in the top 3 and helping to lead the 4x4 relay team.  

Makayla Huus had a strong showing placing in the pole vault to start her sr season.  

“I can't thank all of our Otter Track and Field athletes enough for their hard work, and patience with the last year and into this season's COVID restrictions,” said Welde.  “Every chance we get to take the track and or the field is a blessing.”
