Spartan Men Escape Worthington with One Point Win

The M State Men’s basketball team held off Minnesota West on Wednesday night in Worthington, escaping with a 62-61 win over the Blue Jays.  M State had a 32-16 lead with under two minutes to play in the first half, but an 8 point run by Minnesota West brought them within eight points at 32-24.  A pair of Renell Edwards free throws with fourteen seconds left in the game gave the Spartans a four point lead, however, the Jays hit a three with six seconds remaining to cut the lead to one point.  After a pair of missed free throws by M State, Minnesota West missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer and the Spartans earned the win.

Tyrell Ross-Childs made 6-of-9 field goal attempts, including 3-of-5 3’s, on the way to a game high 19 points.  Kellen Hinsz had 13 and Edwards recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while adding 5 steals and 6 assists.  M State shot 40% from the field and made 9-of-29 3’s in the game.  They were also 15-for-22 from the free throw line.

Minnesota West made only 33% of their shots and just 19% (5-28) of their 3-pointers.  Ty’Shawn Bryant led the Blue Jays with 13 points and 8 rebounds.  Isaak Williams finished with 10 points.  The home team won the battle of the boards 46-38.

M State will host Riverland on Saturday at 3:00pm.
