A late 20-4 run by the Rochester Yellowjackets brought them from a 9-point deficit and helped them to a 72-69 victory over the M State Men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Fergus Falls. Trailing 29-18 in the first half, the Spartan Men went on a 29-3 run to take a 37-32 halftime lead. Rochester regained the lead at 52-51 with 7:46 to play in the game and held on down the stretch to record the 3-point win.
Kellen Hinsz paced four Spartans in double figures, scorin g17 points. He also grabbed 6 rebounds. Nic Pearson scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half and hit 4-of-10 3’s. Mert Taylor had 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists and Renell Edwards finished with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Tyrell Ross-Childs scored 9 points, but dished out 7 assists and led the team with 8 rebounds.
M State shot the ball well in the first half, hitting 48% (14-29) of their shots and making 9-of-17 (53%) of their 3-point attempts. They finished at 41% (24-59) for the game and made 12-of-29 (41.4%) from 3-point range.
Rochester shot 50% (27-54) for the game and made 15-of-17 free throws. They also won the rebounding battle, 39-25.
Jerome Cunningham scored a game high 24 points to lead the Yellowjackets. Devyn Frye (13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists) and Stephen Olander (12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals) were also in double figures. Keivonte Watts dished out 6 assists and Elijah Flenorl led the team with 6 rebounds, while adding 9 points.
M State (2-7) will play Minnesota West in Worthington on Wednesday night.
