The West Central Area Knights posted a 70-53 win over Wheaton/Herman-Norcross in Section 6A boys’ basketball playoffs on Thursday night.  Wheaton/Herman-Norcross started the game 8-8 shooting including four 3's to take a 20-10 lead early.  The Knights outscored the Warriors 60-33 the rest of the way.  They were able to go into half leading 32-30 and then ran away with it in the second half.

The Knights outrebounded the Warriors 24-21.  Knights Coach Kraig Hunter said, "One big difference was that we got outrebounded 11-4 in the first half and we outrebounded them 20-10 in the second half.  We were able to get nine offensive boards in the second half and forced more turnovers giving us eleven more shot attempts than the Warriors.  Our seniors played outstanding tonight.  Tate Christenson impacted the game in many areas and kept us alive in the first half and Brady Reeve did a lot of damage in the second half.  They locked down on Grant Beuckens and he played very unselfish finding the open man and led us in assists.  If teams lock down on Grant, we have a lot of other guys that can score. Ryder Staples was an offensive factor at different moments all throughout the game and our other guys have all been scoring and hitting open shots in the past three weeks.  Having all of these threats has made us tough to defend down the stretch this year."

Both teams were hot as they both shot 53% for the game.  The Knights were 26-49 and the Warriors were 20-38.  From the 3-point line the Knights were hot going 9-17 also for 53% and the Warriors were 8-20 for 40%.  Both teams also shot free throws well as the Knights hit 9-12 and the Warriors 5-6.

Brady Reeve poured in 29 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.  Tate Christenson had 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals; Ryder Staples scored 12 points, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 3 rebounds; Grant Beuckens has 6 points, 5 assists, and a steal; Jacob Strunk had 4 points and 2 assists, Cole Anderson had 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist, and Xander Bontjes had 2 rebounds.

"We came out hot and hit a bunch of shots to take the lead," noted Wheaton/Herman-Norcross Head Coach Jordon Roos.  "WCA then went on a run and hit a bunch of shots to get back in the game. 2nd half we were outplayed and had way too many turnovers and gave up too many offensive rebounds. We played hard, but just didn’t do the little things well enough tonight. It was a very impressive year for a great and young group of kids."

Clint Determan led Wheaton with 17 points and 6 rebounds, Andrew Walker had 13, Grant Dawson 9 points and 4 assists, Dylan Bainbridge 7, Caden Spilde 3, Brayden Hoffer 2, and Zach Braaten 2.

West Central Area (14-4) will play at top-seeded Ashby (19-0) on Saturday.
