Alexandria put 52 shots on the Buffalo/Maple Lake net Tuesday night and they needed every one of them as Buffalo goalie Isabel Varner made 50 saves to keep the Bison in the game. The Cardinals were able to record a 2-1 victory and will advance to play Brainerd/Little Falls on Thursday night in the Section 8AA Girls Hockey Playoffs.
Alexandria got a goal from Hanley Block, assisted by Anna Doherty at 11:23 of the first period, however, Buffalo/Maple Lake tied the game at 15:51 when Maia Hoepner scored from Raegan Wurm.
Doherty’s goal at 2:08 of the second period provided the Cardinals with a 2-1 lead. She was assisted by Lauren Maras and Peyton Boesl.
Varner withstood a 19 shot onslaught in the third period and made 35 saves over the final two periods to keep the Bison within striking range. Alexandria was 0-for-5 on the power play.
