Fergus Falls skiers had a successful day at the Section 8 Nordic Ski meet on Tuesday at Maplelag resort near Detroit Lakes, with David Ronnevik qualifying for the state meet which will be held at Giants Ridge near Biwabik next Friday.

Our boys and girls teams keep making progress and are proving to be real contenders in a very strong section of ski schools,” commented Fergus Falls Head Coach Joshua Scharnberg. “First, the conditions were quite challenging. By the time the girls’ race started, temps were approaching the mid-40s. It was all at once wonderful to be outside, but the sloppy, wet snow makes skiing extra difficult.”

The boys had a firmer course as their race started earlier in the day. Overall, they place 6th out of 12 conference teams. The team consisted of David Ronnevik, Anders Anthonisen-Brown, Luke Schroeder, Tommy Erickson, Kolsen Papon, Jackson Lysne, and Oliver Thorson. The alternates were Ben Schierer, Nick Flugstad, and Logan Bredenberg. For section meets, the top four skiers count for team points. Scoring for the boys, in order of 1st to 4th, was David, Luke, Anders, and Kolsen. David Ronnevik placed 16th overall for the boys race which was enough to qualify him for state.

“Congratulations to David,” said Coach Scharnberg.  “He has been working hard at strength, technique and focus since last season ended, and it has really paid off!”

The girls’ team was made up of Annie Mayer, Sarah Grotberg, Naomi Dummer, Anna Erickson, Ahlea Mouser, Hannah Scharnberg, and Alexis Wellman. Alternates were Olivia Swanson and Estee VerSteeg.

“The girls had a real strong race especially for their age,” noted Scharnberg. “Besides Anna, the other girls are 9th grade or under. As a team, they placed 9th overall. Placing 9th against many older and more experienced varsity skiers is an incredible feat! Needless to say, we're excited to see what these ladies will do in the next few seasons to come.” Scoring for the girls in order of 1st to 4th were Annie Mayer, Alexis Wellman, Sarah Grotberg, and Hannah Scharnberg.

“Before wrapping this up, I'd like to acknowledge that today was Kolsen's last meet as an Otter,” added Coach Scharnberg. “It has been a privilege to coach him over the last two seasons, and I speak for everyone on the team that he will be missed. Thanks Kolsen for your leadership as our captain, for the kindness and hospitality you've shown all your teammates, and for your overall commitment to our team!”

Scharnberg concluded with information on three of his skiers who competed in the American Birkebeiner last week, Ahlea and Micah Mouser and David Ronnevik. “Ahlea and David both skied the 26km Kortelopet. Ahlea finished in just over two hours and fifty minutes. She skied on a very warm day making conditions on the course very difficult, so kudos to her for a strong finish. David had an excellent day and finished in just under an hour and thirty minutes. He placed 3rd overall for the day he raced. Micah placed first overall for his day in the Prince Haakon 14km race. Well done to all three of those skiers!”
