The Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie Raiders entered last week as the 5th ranked wrestling team in class A and as the entire season has unfolded so far, they beat those behind them and fell short to the teams ahead.

The week started with a long trip up to Fosston to grapple the Brawlers from Fosston/Bagley and #4AAA Lumberjacks from Bemidji.  The opening dual saw some exciting matches as Bennet Arceneau collected a second period fall.  David Revering then handed his undefeated opponent his first defeat of the season with a 2-0 controlled decision.  Deagen Captain exploded for a first period technical fall and Aiden Larson grabbed a pin for the 20-0 lead.  The Brawlers cut into the lead with back-to-back wins at 132 and 138 making it 20-9.  The Raiders then ran off three straight falls from Justin Koehn, Brock Peterson, and Mason Schroeder to run the score up to 38-9.  The Brawlers top ranked 170-pounder added their final six points before Tyler Eggert dominated the sixth ranked 182-pounder for a major decision.  Gideon Ervasti put up six.  They gave James Grant six and Hayden Captain closed it with a pin for the 60-15 victory.

The second dual of the night was highly anticipated as both teams were in the state tournament a year ago and last years dual came down to heavyweight giving us the win.  Bemidji opened the scoring with a technical fall.  Revering won another hard-fought decision and Deagen Captain secured the pin as time expired in the second period in what was a crazy match of flurries.  Larson continued to wrestle well in all positions and fended off his opponent for the decision making it 12-5.  The Lumberjacks would answer winning the next four weights.  A decision at 132, major decision at 138, fall at 145, and a last second takedown (literally) at 152 for a 9-8 decision to take the lead at 21-12.  Schroeder and Dean both wrestled 5th ranked wrestlers and disposed of them with third period falls to regain the lead 24-21.  The 182-pound match played out just as 152.  A tight battle all the way through with the Lumberjacks scoring a takedown in the final seconds to prevail knotting the dual at 24-24 with three weights to go.  The matchup of ranked wrestlers at 195 went in favor of Bemidji by major decision and James Grant grabbed six at 220 bringing the outcome of the dual down to the final weight for the second year in a row.  This time the Lumberjacks won the positions and came away with the win for the 33-30 victory.  It was a great dual that could have gone either way.  In the end, the Lumberjacks found a way to finish the matches a little better than us and it made the difference.

The last home event of the season took place in Verndale on Thursday as we celebrated Parents Night.  The Raiders gave the parents in attendance plenty to cheer about as they opened with their first shutout of the season against Mahnomen/Waubun.  Arceneau and Revering led off with pins.  Deagen Captain, Larson, and Blake Sumstad collected freebies.   Reese Thompson picked up a quick pin and Abby Ervasti collected her first win of the season in a hard fought 10-8 decision.  Peterson claimed a forfeit.  Schroeder and Dean found first period pins.  Eggert posted a dominating technical fall.  Gideon Ervasti and Hayden Captain took forfeits and Grant climbed the final to 80-0 with a pin over the Thunderbirds heavyweight.

The nightcap saw BHVPP take care of business against a section 6A foe from Border West.  The Buccaneers opened with a technical fall from their highly ranked 106-pounder.  Revering put down a fall and they responded with a major decision making it 9-6.  The Raiders stormed back taking control of the dual winning the next three.  Forfeits for Larson and Sumstad with a Thompson fall sandwiched in between making it 24-9.  Border West picked up a major decision at 145 and it was 24-13 half-way home.  The second half of the dual went all in favor of the home team as Peterson and Dean received forfeits.  Schroeder and Gideon Ervasti each recorded 11 second pins.  Eggert’s high level of intensity continued as he outdid his 17-point performance from the first dual with another technical fall.  This time putting up 23 points.  Grant and Hayden Captain closed-up shop with pins on top to bring the final to 65-13.  It was a great way to respond to the narrow Bemidji loss.  The team seemed to wrestle every second and every inch of the mat even in the defeats.

Last Saturday should have been a triangular with three ranked teams but Detroit Lakes was unable to attend so the stage was set for a Class A Top-5 showdown as we headed to Belgrade to take on the 2nd ranked Jaguars of BBE.  On paper, it looked to be a battle of two halves.  We knew BBE would get out to a big lead and we would have to claw back.  The question was “if” we could limit the damage and give our big guys a chance to close the gap.  The Jaguars opened with a decision at 106.  Revering answered with a decision to even up the dual at 3-3.  Then BBE rattled off six matches in a row.  They secured a pin in a match that we were winning at 120.  Another fall at 126.  Thompson controlled their State Champ at 132 but his early gator roll was the difference in the 5-3 decision.  Back-to-back falls at 138 and 145 along with a major decision at 152 made it 34-3.  Not ideally where we wanted to be sitting at this point of the dual.  However, Schroeder and Dean cut into the lead with falls making it 34-15 with four weights to go.  The 182-pound match was a back-and-forth battle that went in favor of the Jaguars 4-3 in the final thirty seconds to secure the dual.  Gideon Ervasti crushed his ranked opponent for the fall.  Grant added a decision, and Hayden Captain picked up the pin to round out the scoring out 37-30 in favor of BBE.  It was another great dual just like the Bemidji one and it really goes to show how important a takedown, escape, reversal, near fall, major decision, technical fall, or pin here or there throughout the dual makes the difference in the end as bonus points are crucial in securing victories against top notch opponents.  Our schedule has been brutal as we have faced thirteen ranked opponents out of our 27 duals in preparation to be ready for the tall task ahead.  Hopefully, the lessons learned from the tough schedule will pay off in the end.

The final week of the season has us putting our 20-7 record on the line as we travel to Eden Valley on Tuesday to square off against Eden Valley-Watkins and Milaca and we close out the regular season in a rematch of the Section 6A championship from a year ago against West Central along with OTC joining us for the triangular in Barrett.  #BHVPP #allforoneoneforall.
