Mahnomen-Waubun hosted Pelican Rapids in a high school boys’ basketball contest on Saturday afternoon in Waubun with the Thunderbirds recording a 71-56 win after taking a 45-25 halftime lead.

“We knew coming into the game we’d have to limit our turnovers and try to make them play a half court style, but we were unable to do that as they turned us over a lot and turned those steals into quick points,” commented Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Gullingsrud. “We had a stretch to start the game and another one midway through the second half where we were able to compete with them, but other than that they played at an effort and toughness level that we were unable to match.”

The Vikings were led by Liam Sytsma with 12 points.  Jayden Rutherford added 9, while Logan Fahje and Brayden Ecker contributed 8 points apiece.

Mahnomen-Waubun had four players in double digits, led by Loden Clark with 19.  Tanner Pazdernik and Payton Keezer each had a dozen and Cooper Houdek finished with 11.

Pelican Rapids (6-6) will host Thief River Falls in another non-conference battle on Tuesday night and returns to HOL play on Friday in Glyndon against DGF.
