On Tuesday Detroit Lakes hosted Bemidji, Moorhead, and Trek North in the morning races; Alexandria, Brainerd, and Little Falls in the early afternoon races; and Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls in the afternoon races. The races were held at Detroit Mountain in Detroit Lakes. It was about zero degrees when the races started. It's amazing how zero degrees can feel balmy after days in the sub-zero freezer.

Jackson Lysne, 9th, has been racing JV and now Varsity for our team,” said Head Coach Joshua Scharnberg. “I asked him how he got into skiing. He says, "Pressure from my uncle [Sean Taylor]! Also, my cousins were in it and my friends. I really like [skiing] too." Can you put into words what you love so much about it? "It's hard to explain. Just being out there, [in the cold,] when most people aren't outside, enjoying the snow. I was kind of born with skis on my feet. Both parents are skiers." How's the season going so far? "It's going good. I just like racing with my teammates, pushing each other and sometimes getting lost!" Side note: Jackson would be the first to admit he got a little off course in yesterday's race. To his defense, the arrow for the turn was quite small and difficult to see!”

Scharnberg continued, “Keanah Wynn, 11th, is a second year JV skier on our team. She decided to join skiing last year because, "Friends." Keanah simply loves being around her people. When pressed further she commented, "And I needed a sport to do in the winter." I asked what skiing is like in her second year. She says, "It's fun. I like it. I'm not the biggest fan of the meets, but I like the people. I admit, I do like the classic meets... I like being able to go out every day, to go out in nature and ski around. I'm able to go on different courses and be by myself or with other people."

“We're a team. We go to races, and that is what I report on. Beyond racing and more importantly, one of our Team Goals is to become lifetime skiers. Almost every time I interview my skiers, they never talk about the races unless prompted. It's always about being outside, in the woods, with each other on skis. As proud as I am of them as racers, I love sharing with you their true passion for our sport.  We're off to Maplelag again next week, on Monday for a Pursuit race against Moorhead, Little Falls, and Brainerd. We might have a make-up meet at St. John's next Thursday.”
