After a long ride to Worthington on Wednesday night the M State lady Spartans got off to a great start, outscoring the Lady Bluejays 18-6 in the second quarter to build a 37-27 advantage at the half.  Minnesota West pulled even at 47-47 after three quarters and finished strong to record a 68-64 win.

“We played an outstanding first half, leading by ten points,” stated M State Head Coach Jodi Holleman.  “Minnesota West came out with a lot of energy in the third quarter and we got into foul trouble.  The bench players came in and played awesome.  We had our chances down the stretch but missed too many free throws and bunny shots.”

M State shot 40% (23-58) for the game and made 16-of-22 free throws.  They were led by 19 points from Ali Kranz, who completed a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds.  Jayna Gronewold added 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and had 3 assists.  Sabrina Fronning was also in double digits with 11 points.  Fronning keyed the defense with 7 steals as the Lady Spartans forced 26 turnovers, unfortunately, they also committed 26 turnovers on the night.  M State had a strong rebounding effort, winning the battle of the boards 47-33.

Leaders for Minnesota West were Mallory Thorson (22 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists), Emily Wilke (18 points, 6 rebounds) and Shelby Christensen (13 points).  Justine Bernazeau had a team high 6 assists.  The Bluejays hit 36% (21-58) of their shots from the floor, made 8-of-25 treys and connected on 18-of-26 foul shots.

M State will be looking for their first win of the season when they host Riverland at one o’clock Saturday in Fergus Falls.
