Willmar Tops Alexandria Girls in CLC Hockey

Willmar defeated Alexandria 5-1 on Tuesday night to win the battle of the Cardinals in girls’ hockey at the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria. 

The game was scoreless after the first period, however, Willmar scored three second period goals to take a 3-1 lead after two.  Bailey Olson got the scoring started just fifteen seconds into the period when she converted a pass from Madison Garberding for the first goal of the night.  Willmar made it a 2-0 lead when Garberding connected on the power play with an assist from Nina Dawson at 6:53.  Peyton Boesl got Alexandria’s goal at 7:07, assisted by Lauren Maras and Riley Nyberg, but Willmar added another goal by Olson, assisted by Ashley Larson, at 13:02.

Dawson scored from Kessa Mara at 8:04 of the third period and Olson completed her hat trick at 8:46 with an unassisted goal, putting the final at 5-0, Willmar.

Alexandria outshot Willmar 31-17, but Willmar goalie Halle Mortensen stopped 30 of the shots.
