The Underwood girls’ basketball team earned their fifth win in six games when they handed the Hillcrest Comets a 66-38 loss on Tuesday night in Fergus Falls.  Even though they lost the game, the Comets were able to celebrate a milestone as Mackenzie Foss reached 1000 career points during the game.

“We have not played a game since last Monday, and I was a little worried about how we would react,” stated Head Coach Brian Hovland of the Rockets.  “I think we came ready to play tonight, probably the best we have played on both ends of the floor.  The girls got to witness a little history as Mackenzie Foss hit a 3 late in the second have to reach 1000 career points.  She is an impressive player.  Congrats to her!”

Underwood was led by Liz Lukken (16 points, 5 rebounds), Josey Bugbee (16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists), Brooke Hovland (9 points, 3 assists, 3 steals) and Moraes Bugbee (8 points, 3 steals).

“We let Underwood dictate the game on both ends of the floor tonight,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Hannah Clark. “We really struggled against their defensive pressure and could not get settled into our offense. 27 turnovers are way too many when you're playing against a team like Underwood. We became more comfortable on offense in the middle of the second half, but by that time we had fallen too far behind to recover. Of our 15 made shots, we had 12 assists. I was pleased with how we shared the ball rather than trying to play one on one.”

The Comets were led by Mackenzie Foss (16 points, 5 steals), Madi Ballweg (9 points), Ella Knutson (8 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), Madi Foss (3 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) and Regan Wiertzema (2 points, 5 rebounds).

“Congratulations to Kenzie on scoring her 1,000th point,” added Clark. “She has worked really hard and has spent many hours in the gym. She's a great basketball player, but even a better person! I'm so happy to see her reach this milestone.”

Hillcrest (1-5) will play at Rothsay on Thursday.

Underwood (5-1) is at Battle Lake Thursday night.
