Two matches on Tuesday at New London and two more on Friday in Crosby made for a busy week for the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie wrestling team.  The Wildcats finished with a 2-2 record for the week.

Last week started off with two tough contests on Tuesday at New London.  The Wildcats started off the strong by taking the first four weights to get out to a 18-0 lead before Aiden Larson earned a major decision.  NLS would collect fourteen more points extending the lead to 32-4 before we got rolling.  Jason Koehn grabbed a decision.  Mason Schroeder and Gideon Ervasti picked up falls sandwiching forfeits for Brock Peterson and Tyler Eggert to bring the dual down to heavyweight.  James Grant gave us a valiant effort but fell short to the #2AA ranked heavyweight and we dropped the dual 35-31.

The second dual of the triangular was against AAA Lean and Mean Willmar and again the Raiders started out slow dropping the first four matches and falling behind 21-0.  Larson secured a pin and the Cardinals ran off four more victories opening it up at 43-6.  BHVPP would win three of the final five bouts with falls from Schroeder and Peterson, and a decision for Grant to go down in defeat 52-21.

Friday night gave BHVPP a chance to get back on track at a triangular at Crosby.  Facing off against a couple teams with limited numbers allowed for some JV kids to step up to the varsity and capture their shining moment.  Justin Olson recorded his first varsity win by pin to begin the Red Lake County Central dual.  A parade of forfeits followed for Bennet Arceneau, David Revering, Deagen Captain, Larson, and Blake Sumstad.  Reese Thompson took care of his opponent in the first period and Justin Koehn, Jason Koehn, and Schroeder continued the parade.  The Mustangs ranked wrestled at 182 helped them avoid the shutout before pins for Ervasti and Grant (over a ranked opponent) and a forfeit for Hayden Captain maximized the dual scoring 78-6.

The nightcap saw Olson repeat the first results.  Arceneau also earned a fall before Revering grabbed a Forfeit.  Larson and Sumstad secured falls sandwiching Holden Truax’s forfeit and the Raiders were out to the 36-0 lead.  The host Crosby-Ironton Rangers got on the board with a pin at 145.  Then Justin Koehn dominated for a technical fall.  Jason Koehn took a forfeit and Schroeder glued the shoulders to the mat along with Peterson to extend the lead to 59-6.  The Rangers took 195 by a fall to double their score.  Then at 220, Braden Shamp stepped up to grab his first varsity victory with a quick 24 second pin.  Hayden Captain delivered the final blow as the BHVPP put up 70 in both duals with a 71-12 final.  It was a great night of wrestling as we went 31-3 in individual matches on the night.  The team looked good and seems to be heading in the right direction with three of four duals this coming week against ranked opponents.  This time they will be at home in PP on Tuesday against Minneota and Osakis with Crookston and ACGC coming to Bertha on Saturday.
