The M State lady Spartans opened their basketball season on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Jamestown JV squad.  The Jimmies came out on top, 60-56.

Alison Krantz registered a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds.  Kranz made 11-of-15 field goal attempts.  Jayna Gronewold finished with 12 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds, and Sabrina Fronning had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 5 assists.  Emily Larson and Lindsey Kurz each snared 6 rebounds for the lady Spartans.

“We were very excited to get back on the court again,” said Head Coach Jodi Holleman.  “We took on a very strong Jamestown JV team that started their season in October and had played 16 games already.  I was very pleased with how the girls played for the home opener, especially when you consider we have nine freshmen playing college basketball for the first time.”

The Spartans shot 35% (22-63) from the field, but made 11-of-14 (78.6%) free throws.  They struggled from 3-point range, hitting only 1-of-15 from beyond the arc.  The Spartans won the rebounding battle, 46-34, and had 13 assisted baskets on the day.

“I am very confident that we will continue to improve with each game,” added Coach Holleman.  “I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to coach these talented young ladies.”

Jordynn Toliver led Jamestown with 16 points and 7 steals, and McKenna Becher had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.  Taylor Froslie was also in double figures with 13 points.  Jamestown shot 37.5% (24-64) for the game and made only 2-of-18 3’s.

M State will travel to Jamestown on Wednesday for a rematch.
