Pelican Rapids traveled to Barnesville on Saturday afternoon for a Heart O' Lakes Conference boys' basketball matchup that proved to be quite a 'barn burner'.  The Vikings scored 17 of the last 19 points of the first half to overcome a ten point deficit and take a 9 point lead into the locker room at 41-32.  Barnesville came back to take the lead briefly in the second half, however, Pelican Rapids held off the Trojans for a 76-68 win.

Pelican Rapids placed four players in double figures, led by 19 points from Logan Fahje and 17 from McHale Korf.  Korf hit 7-of-10 free throws in the second half to help the Vikings maintain their lead down the stretch.  Jayden Rutherford, whose 3-pointer gave Pelican their first lead at 31-30, contributed 14 points and Brayden Ecker also scored 14.

“This was a really good win for our group as Barnesville is always a tough place to get a road win at,” said Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Gullingsrud. “We had to fight through some offensive lulls at the start of both halves, but we did a good job at finishing both halves to build the lead at halftime and to come away with the win in the second half. We were balanced on offense with four guys reaching double figures and also had some big contributions from others with some timely baskets and hustle plays on the defensive end and as well.”

Despite being in early foul trouble and being forced to set for several minutes in each half, senior Adam Tonsfeldt poured in a game high 25 points for the Trojans, sixteen of them in the second half.  Kaden Zenzen was a force inside, adding 21 points.  Barnesville lost Tonsfeldt and Jack Nielsen to fouls late in the game, while Pelican Rapids forward Hunter Williams also fouled out with just under four minutes to play.

Neither team shot the ball well from the free throw line as Barnesville hit only 11 of 23 and Pelican connected on 13 of 22.

The Trojans (2-1) will play at unbeaten Breckenridge on Tuesday, while Pelican Rapids (3-1) hosts DGF.
