A strong fourth quarter brought the Hawley Nuggets from a 24-21 third quarter deficit to a 34-22 victory over Crookston on Friday, November 6 in Hawley.

A five yard run by Ethan Boll with 6:07 left in the first quarter, followed by a two-point conversion run by Boll, spotted the Pirates an 8-0 lead.  Hawley trimmed it to 8-7 with 1:13 remaining in the opening quarter when Sam Burkel scored on a 5 yard run and then booted the extra point kick.

Boll’s second TD of the night came on a 2-yard run early in the second quarter.  His two-point conversion put the Pirates ahead 16-7.  Cole Sunde then connected with Joey Aakre on a 35-yard scoring toss for Hawley with 2:35 on the clock in the first half.  Burkel’s PAT kick cut the Pirates lead to 16-14 at the break.

Crookston increased their lead to 24-14 with 4:02 left in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Boll and a two-point conversion run.  Sunde and Aakre hooked up on a 9 yard TD pass with thirty-one seconds to go in the third and Burkel’s kick cut the Crookston lead to 24-21.

Two more Sunde TD passes, one covering 30 yards to Burkel, and the other an 18 yard connection with Carson Brew, along with a PAT kick by Burkel, gave Hawley a 34-24 lead with 5:02 to play in the game. Crookston made it interesting down the stretch as Boll got into the end zone for a fourth time, this time on a 2-yard run with just 2:31 remaining in the game.  His two-point conversion run made it 34-32, but that was all the closer the Pirates could get.

The two teams combined for 717 yards of offense with Hawley accumulating 361 yards (189 passing, 172 rushing) and Crookston 356 (250 rushing, 106 passing).

Sunde completed 11-of-15 passes for 189 yards and 4 scores.  His leading receivers were Mason Gratten (4 catches, 85 yards) and Joey Aakre (3 catches, 49 yards).  Burkel led the ground attack with 99 yards on 20 attempts.

Boll ran for 224 yards on 33 carries to lead the Pirates.  Zach Brown was their leading receiver with 2 catches for 52 yards.

The Hawley defense was led by Darin Kroshus with 7 solo tackles and 54 assisted tackles.

Hawley (3-1) will close out their regular season schedule with a 4:30pm kick-off against Ottertail Central on Wednesday, November 11, in Henning.
