Nuggets Overcome Halftime Deficit to Defeat Roseau

The Hawley Nuggets overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit against Roseau on Friday, October 9, tying the game at 14-14 after three quarters and finishing strong with a 14 point fourth quarter to post a 28-14 victory over the Rams in Hawley.

 

Roseau struck with 6:13 to play in the first quarter when Jed Dunham completed an 11 yard touchdown pass to Aidan Walsch and Dunham ran the ball in for the two-point conversion, giving the Rams an 8-0 lead.  Hawley responded with 2:23 left in the quarter as Justin Koski scored on a 5-yard run and Sam Burkel added the PAT kick, trimming the Roseau lead to 7-6.

A 3-yard run by Dunham with 7:17 remaining in the first half, gave Roseau their 14-7 halftime advantage.

Koski scored on a 3-yard run and Burkel kicked the extra point to bring the Nuggets event at 14-14 with seven minutes to go in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Nuggets as Burkel scored on a 30-yard run and Koski on a one-yard run.  Both PAT kicks by Burkel were good, putting the final score at 28-14.

Hawley finished with 311 yards of total offense, 292 on the ground.  The ground attack featured a pair of 100 yard backs as Koski ran for 180 yards on 22 attempts and Burkel had 122 yards on 15 carries.  Cole Sunde was 2-for-10 throwing the football for 19 yards.  Carson Brew (1 catch, 12 yards) and Joey Aakre (1 catch, 7 yards) were on the receiving end of the completed passes.  Ethan Magnusson was the top tackler with 5 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles and a half-a-sack.  Aakre was also credited with half-a-sack and Kaden Murphy also recorded a sack.

Roseau had 267 yards (204 passing, 63 rushing).  Quarterback Race Knochemus completed 11-of-16 passes for 131 yards and Dunham was 5-for-8 for 73 yards.  Walsch led the offense with 5 receptions for 45 yards and also led the Rams with 41 rushing yards on 14 carries.
