The Breckenridge Cowgirls traveled to Perham on Friday night and came home with a thrilling 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 15-6) Heart O’ Lakes Conference volleyball win over the Yellowjackets.

“What an exciting match and an excellent win for the Cowgirls,” exclaimed Breckenridge Head coach Margaret Wilson.  “Looking at past records from 2000 on, this must be the first time we have beaten Perham in over 20 years!”

The Cowgirls took an early lead in the 1st set, but the Jackets came back to tie it up at the end of the set and took the 1st 24-26. The second set again had the Cowgirls with an early lead, and this set they kept it, winning Set 2 25-22. 3rd Set was back to the Yellow Jackets as they closed it 25-21. With the Cowgirls down 1-2 sets, we knew we had to keep Perham out-of-system to keep our offense going. The 4th set looked similar to the 2nd set with the Cowgirls taking an early lead and keeping it throughout the set winning 25-22. Bringing on a 5th set, the Cowgirls started with the serve and it was all Cowgirls after that, winning the 5th set 15-6.

“We received many compliments and congratulations after the match,” added Coach Wilson. “We hit the ball well, we blocked very well, and we served aggressively!”

Sophomore outside Abby Johnson the Cowgirls in kills with 18, followed by Junior outside Camryn Kaehler with 16 and Senior Middle Jude Held with 12.

“Our blockers had a great night, recording 8 total kill blocks throughout the match,” noted Wilson. “Defensively, junior libero Riley Finkral and Johnson led the Cowgirls with 25 digs each. This team defines hard work, adversity and are true teammates. We are so grateful to be able to play!”

The Cowgirls finish week 3 with a record of 3-0. Looking ahead, next week the Cowgirls host section 6A opponent Wheaton on Tuesday, Oct. 27th and host conference opponent Hawley on Thursday, Oct. 29th.
