The Barnesville Trojans entered their game Friday afternoon against Roseau with roughly 35 players in grades 9-12 missing due to being in quarantine because of close contact with positive COVID cases.

“We were also without our offensive coordinator, Phil Trowbridge, and quarterback coach Nathan Strand,” said Barnesville Head Coach Bryan Strand.  “We were without two way starters Kaden Zenzen, Brady Kroll, Noah Krause and Jonny Robideau, along with starting offensive tackle Tim Well, starting corner Peyton Pauna and starting offensive lineman Travis Affield, plus many more players that started last week against Hawley when we were also shorthanded due to quarantine.  To say we were shorthanded is a huge understatement.  We dressed fifteen guys that have had any sort of varsity experience.”

Strand continued, “We finally got Eric Ackerson back after having to quarantine the first two games.  He played one series on defense, one scoring drive on defense and then suffered a knee injury that took him out of this game, could be season ending.  I feel so bad for Eric as he has worked so hard to get to where he is at, weights, running, summer training and such a great kid.  Hopeful it is something that we can brace up and have him finish the year.  We did get Adam Tonsfeldt, Marcus Paul and kicker Nolan Rick back off of quarantine so that helped.  All played big roles tonight.  We had all practices this week in the gym, we would zoom in the players and coaches that were out - hook up speakers to a computer and literally ran the week with the varsity guys and about 12-14 freshmen and sophomores.  We would zoom every night with the boys at home going over video and past games, basically teaching how to execute the plays that most of them haven't run the entire year.  I am so proud of all of them, from the 9th graders who helped us all week to the seniors that got their shot today.”

Roseau got the ball first in the game and after 3 plays punted to the Trojans, giving Barnesville the ball on the 34 yard line.  A few runs into the drive Tonsfeldt ran the ball in and the conversion failed giving the Trojans a 6-0 lead.  After the defense stopped the Rams again, Barnesville started in good field position at the 40 yard line.  The Trojans ran a play-action pass on first down and Tonsfeldt found a wide open Joey Mark for a 60 yard TD pass.  The 2 point conversion by Aaron Schiefert was good, and the Trojans led 14-0.

“In the 2nd quarter our defense played great, giving up 13 yards on the ground and -1 passing,” reported Coach Strand.  Barnesville scored on a run by Cameron Heng from 3 yards out and another conversion run by Schiefert increasing their lead to 22-0.  On their next offensive drive Tonsfeldt took the ball in from 24 yards out. Again Schiefert scored the 2 point conversion and the lead grew to 30-0.  The Trojans put together a fantastic drive right before the half but ran out of time with the ball at the 1 yard line.

Barnesville got the ball first in the 3rd quarter and scored on a 53 yard run by Heng on the very first play to put the score at 36-0.  Aaron Schiefert scored the final TD of the game in the 3rd quarter when he dove in from 1 yard out, making the final 42-0.

“In the 4th quarter we saw some backups getting some time and many freshmen seeing the field for the first time all year,” noted Coach Strand.  “We had some mishaps on exchanges on offense but still played great defense.  We gave up 3 yards rushing and 18 yards passing in the final push by Roseau.  We have two huge weeks coming up and I’m glad we are going to be getting everyone back this week!  WCA is a fantastic team as is Breckenridge, we will have to have a great two weeks of practice to be ready for this.  Again I can't speak high enough about my kids and fellow coaches on getting ready for this game today.  They all did great.”

Statistical leaders for the Trojans were Heng (5 carries, 76 yards, 2 TDs), Schiefert (10 carries, 67 yards, TD) and Tonsfeldt (10 carries, 65 yards, 2TDs, 3-for-5 passing, 89 yards, TD).  Joey Mark was on the receiving end of all 3 completions.  Barnesville had 248 rushing yards, 89 passing yards and 337 yards of total offense, while holding Roseau to 101 (34 rushing, 67 passing) total yards.  Defensively, Tonsfeldt had an interception, while Schiefert and Heng each recovered a fumble.  The leading tacklers were Mark (5 solo, 4 assisted, 2 caused fumbles) and Schiefert (2 solo, 6 assisted).  Schiefert, Wyatt Roller, Ethan Larson and Cole Swenson each recorded one sack.
