Even though East Grand Forks ran 66 offensive plays to just 39 for Fergus Falls and the Greenwave compiled 297 yards to the Otters 97, Fergus Falls won their home opener 14-12 on Friday night at the Otter Stadium Field.

Justin Overgaard of the Greenwave returned a fumble 33 yards for the first score of the game in the first quarter.  A failed two-point conversion try left the score at 6-0.

A pair of second quarter touchdowns lifted the Otters to a 14-6 halftime lead.  A 20 yard TD pass from Dominic Aguilar to Abel Aho tied the game and a ten yard run by Kaden Hartwell put the Otters in front.  An Aguilar to Aho two-point conversion pass got the Otters to 14 points.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Sam Votava hooked up with Brody Schultz on a 12 yard scoring toss, however, a failed two-point conversion left the Greenwave two points shy.

The Otters had 11 penalties for 125 yards and turned the ball over three times in the game.  East Grand Forks also had 3 turnovers, but recorded 16 first downs to 7 for the Otters.

“As we expected there were a lot of mistakes, too many turnovers and penalties,” noted Fergus Falls Head Coach Steve Olson.  “The team showed a lot of resiliency and competed throughout.  I am extremely happy for kids on both teams that they were able to be out there playing football on a Friday night in the fall.  It’s the way things should be.”

Aguilar was 2-for-6 throwing the football for 29 yards, with Aho making both receptions.  Landon Thacker (7 carries, 33 yards) and Cole Zierden (6 carries, 29 yards) led the rushing attack for the Otters.

For East Grand Forks, Votava completed 14 of 25 passes for 134 yards with Schultz catching 4 passes for 50 yards.  Jack Uhrich and Aho each had an interception for Fergus Falls.

The Otters will travel to Thief River Falls for a 6:00pm game on Thursday, October 15.
