In an intense match that has been building since the first meeting between these two squads, the top two teams in the Lakes to Prairie Conference and Section 8A went toe to toe for 80 minutes with the conference championship up for grabs.  The Vikings needed a win or a tie to secure the title while the Green Wave needed an outright victory.

The Green Wave scored early taking advantage of the strong southerly wind when a thru pass was played to the Green Wave striker and he converted to put the home team up 1-0.  With less than five minutes to play in the first half, the Green Wave earned a free kick deep in the right corner and Green Wave player, Tommy Ellis’ shot was caught in the wind and ended up banging off the far post into the goal to make it 2-0 going into the half.

In the second half, the Vikings battled back with Abdi Isse scoring with six minutes to play to bring the Vikings within a goal.  The Vikings had multiple opportunities late to close the gap and tie the game, but all shots were turned away by the Green Wave goalkeeper.  The Vikings out-shot the Green Wave 10-2 on the evening but in the end fell by a score of 2-1.

The Vikings finish the regular season 7-2 having previously secured the number one seed in Section 8A.  They will host Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Monday at 4 pm at Brown Field.  All tickets are pre-sale only for the playoff games and must be purchased at the high school office.

One additional note, earlier in the afternoon, Head Coach John Peter was named the Section 8A Coach of the Year for the second year in a row as voted by the MN Coaches Association.
