Just eleven days ago, the Pelican Rapids Vikings traveled to Hillcrest for their previous boys’ soccer game with five starters missing from the line-up due to injury and health (non-COVID related) issues.  In the long break between matches, the Vikings used the time between games to heal up and prepare for the end of season push.

This past Saturday, as the Comets came to visit the Vikings for the culmination of Homecoming weekend, the Vikings' starting eleven was nearly back to a full strength with only Sebastian Rosiles not getting the starting nod back into the line-up.

The match did not get off to a good start for the Vikings.  Just two minutes in, a poor pass out of the back was intercepted by the Comets and quickly converted into a goal by Comet Caden Fisher.  To add to the trouble for the Vikings, Fisher's momentum carried him into Viking Goalkeeper Cris Abarca.  Abarca hit his head and was unable to return.  Sebastian Rosiles has been the back-up keeper for the Vikings but was forced into his first game action of the season in goal just two minutes into the match.

The opponent goal, paired with the injury to Abarca, left the crowd briefly stunned, but the Vikings quickly responded and just eight minutes later, Mohamed Ahmed received a cutting pass from Abdi Isse and put it into the back of the net.  At the 22:50 mark in the first half, Jesus Moreno hit a cross which Khadar Ibrahim headed straight to the Comet goalkeeper who bobbled the ball and Ahmed was there to poke the ball into the net for his second goal of the match.  Less than two minutes later, Moreno hit another cross just out of reach of a leaping Ibrahim, but Ahmed was there again to head the ball into the goal and giving Ahmed his first career hat-trick.

With ten minutes remaining, Isse again cut thru the defense with a pass finding Ibrahim.  Just over a minute later, Isse picked up a loose ball fired it home to put the Vikings 5-1 and two minutes after that Isse again found Ahmed who scored his 4th goal of the match.

In the second half, most of the Vikings minutes were filled with reserves looking to prove their opportunities.  Jaime Zavala returned to the pitch for the first time all season and quickly found Hamsa Ishowa with a cutback pass that Ishowa was able to put into the back of the net.  Suhayb Farah was able to connect with Khadar Ibrahim who scored his second goal of the match and with 4:30 remaining, the Vikings earned a penalty kick that Abdi Isse was able to convert for his second goal of the match.  That pushed the final score out to 9-1.

The Vikings are now 6-1 and finish the final week of the regular season with two big matches on the road.  Tuesday night, they play Detroit Lakes at 7pm and Thursday night they will make the trip to East Grand Forks.  The Vikings are currently in a two-way tie with the Green Wave in the conference standings, so that figures to be an intense final match of the regular season.
