As the West Central Area Knights wind down their Cross Country season, they are still racing, competing and honing their skills as they prepare for post season, whatever that may look like.

The WCA girls faced state ranked Pequot Lake’s squad and Breckenridge/Wahpeton and barely lost by a score of 27 to 28 to Pequot Lakes on Friday. “Their 1-2 punch are as good as anyone’s top two in the state,” noted WCA Head Coach John Van Kempen.  “Lexi Bright split them up and ran between them to finish 2nd.”  Pequot had the next 2 finishers for 3rd and 4th and the Knight’s had the next four in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th.  Pequot had the 9th and 10th place finishers.    “We couldn’t have been more pleased with how our girls didn’t back down,” added Van Kempen. Taylor Bennett finished 5th, Macy Grosz in 6th, Terina Blascyk in 7th and Halle Foslien in 8th.  Halle passed two Pequot runners down the stretch so on watchers were scrambling trying to do the math.  Alexa Blume was WCA’s next finisher in 12th, followed by Sydney Ulrich in 14th and Brynn Fernholz in 18th.

The girls JV squad was led by Mya Foslien in 1st place, Chloe Larue (2nd), Blair Reuter (3rd) and Liz Rustan (6th).  WCA was one short to score as a team, but they too raced hard.

Kyle Schill led the boys out and raced like he had something to prove, finishing in 16:47 and ahead of teammate Kade Runge who had to pass a racer down the stretch.  Alex Salwasser was 4th, Shad Swanson in 5th and Reubens Swanson in 6th.  The top 5 runners were all under 18 minutes, ending up with 18 points, followed by Pequot Lakes with 39 and B/W with 79.  Peyton Hanson was 12th, Roman Mihailovschi in 15th and Eli Bergman in 17th for his first varsity experience and under 19:30.

Dane Anderson won the JV race easily with teammates Tyler Biss in 5th, Isaac Kreft in 6th, Jack Courrier in 11th and Jeremy Fisk in 14th.  The JV boys came in 2nd place.

The junior high girls finished in 2nd place with Nora Anderson dominating and winning by more than a minute.  Brooklyn Strobel was 5th, Ayden Porter 6th, Sydney Huntley 7th, Lily Mahoney 13th, Izzy Strunk 14th, and Steph Reeve in 17th.  The girls finished in 2nd.

The boys junior high had Ben Bye in 2nd, Sam Hanson 4th, Aaron Biss 5th, Carter Kjesbo in 6th and Simon Moritz in 14th.  The boys junior high finished in 1st, narrowly edging out Pequot Lakes.
