Thursday night the Fergus Falls girls’ tennis team traveled to Bemidji to take on the Lumberjacks for the second time this season.  The Otters earned a couple of nice singles wins against a tough Jack team.  Bemidji took the match 5-2.

Ellie Colbeck faced the north sub-section returning champ in Savannah Haugen.  “Ellie stroked the ball well tonight and really battled hard in the second set, but Savannah´s repertoire of shots was just too much for Ellie,” commented Head Coach Jamie Lill.  “It was a clean, well-played match on both sides.  Our first doubles team of Ava Weber and Leila Nasri ran into a top doubles team as well.  Ava and Leila found themselves down a set pretty quickly, but really did a great job of going on the offensive in the second set.  They used the entire court well and kept the big Bemidji volleyers home more in the second set, allowing us more chances to go for shots and hit winners.  This second set was a great set for our girls, even though they fell 6-4.”

The Fergus Falls wins came at 3rd and 4th singles.  In 3rd singles, Isabella Abrahams played a great all-around match.  “Bella stroked the ball well from the baseline and took advantage of her volleying skills when she could work her way into the net,” noted Lill.  “Bella was mentally tough tonight.  She was up 4-3 in the first set, but ended up dropping it 6-4.  Pure grit is what kept her in the match after that.  Often times we can see a player just kind of ¨go away¨ after dropping a set like that, but Bella wasn´t going anywhere.  She battled through a very tight second set before winning it 6-4.  Then, Bella proceeded to play a flawless super tie-breaker to win the third set 10-4.  This match should be a huge confidence boost for Bella.  She´s really hitting well as of late which is perfect timing heading into post-season soon.  Amber Anderson earned the 4th singles win for us in pretty routine fashion at 6-2, 6-2.  Amber did a nice job of utilizing her forehand as a weapon and showed consistency in her serving tonight, which was great to see.  This win should also help build some confidence for Amber as well.”

Logan Strom
and Maddie Longtin made varsity debuts on Thursday.  “It was fun to see these new girls get their opportunity tonight,” added Coach Lill.
