Role Players Come Thru for Vikings in Victory

Injuries and illness (unrelated to COVID19) have plagued the Pelican Rapids' Boys Soccer team over the past ten days leaving the Vikings without five starting members of their team.  The Vikings fielded a side consisting of veterans and first year players at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Tuesday, resulting in a 5-1 victory.

From the start, Hillcrest employed a defensive tactic called "parking the bus" in which all but one player stays in the defensive half of the field and protects the goal.  This made things increasingly tricky for the Vikings who rely on exploiting space and counter attacking as their main form of offense.

Showing patience in their attack, the Vikings finally broke thru when striker Daniel Urbano was able to distribute the ball to Hamsa Ishowa who put the ball past the Comet's goalkeeper.  Ishowa was starting his first match of the season after seeing a limited role through the first five matches.  Seven minutes after Ishowa's goal, the Vikings earned a corner and Jesus Moreno's serve was deflected off the back heel of a leaping Abdi Isse to make the score 2-0.

Halfway thru the first half, a loose ball was struck thirty yards from goal by a Hillcrest player and the ball found the back of the net to make the score 2-1.  The Vikings continued their ball control and possession and used patience to wait for opportunities.  With just 4 minutes remaining, the Vikings earned a free kick near the top of the penalty box.  Abdi Isse stepped over the ball and Jesus Moreno buried the shot to send the Vikings into halftime with a lead of 3-1.

In the second half, things remained as status quo until the 58:29 mark when Ishowa repaid Urbano for his early assist by placing a pass for Urbano to run onto and score.  With seven minutes remaining, the pair connected again with Urbano earning his second goal of the match and pushing the Viking lead to 5-1.

"Today was about getting thru the match without any more injuries and picking up a win.  We accomplished both and I was proud of how the boys stepped up into different roles due to all the injuries facing the team now.  We started four freshman and one eighth grader tonight and for most of the match only had two substitutes available," said Head Coach John Peter after the match.

The Vikings record is now 5-1 and they sit in a continued three-way tie in 1st place with Detroit Lakes and East Grand Forks in the Lakes to Prairie conference.  The Vikings now have an eleven-day layoff from games before hosting Hillcrest on Homecoming weekend on October 3rd.  The Vikings hope to use this time to regain health and fitness within the team.
