The Fergus Falls girls’ tennis team hosted the Willmar Cardinals in a Central Lakes Conference dual at Broadway Park on Tuesday.  It was an absolute nail biter that came down to a decisive third set in the decisive final match on court.  Willmar ended up earning the narrow victory over the Otters 4-3.

“Tonight was a great overall match for our girls to compete so closely with Willmar,” said Fergus Falls Head Coach Jamie Lill

The Otter wins came at first and second singles and second doubles.  Ellie Colbeck got a win in an extremely close three-setter, pulling off the victory 9-7 in the final set tie breaker.  “Ellie cruised through her first set, but Alyssa Morrell of Willmar was not done,” reported Lill.  “She put up one heck of a battle against Colbeck.  Madison Anderson played her smartest match of the season tonight.  Madison and her opponent were fairly evenly matched as play began, but Madison stayed the course mentally.  She was prepared for a long battle.  She worked the points until she saw the right opportunities to go big and she did.  She played within herself well tonight and had great results to show for her efforts.”

Hannah Prody and Ashtyn Lill put together a nice straight set victory at second doubles.  “They used all different styles of play to pull this one off,” stated Lill. “They were effective with their cross-court return game, their lobs and their net play.  With the match tied at three apiece, third doubles duo of Paige Pearson and Amber Anderson were just in their second set after dropping a quick first set 6-1.  Paige and Amber dug in deep to get themselves into the match.  Paige did a great job of managing the net, while Amber stroked from the baseline.  The pair took the second set 7-5, forcing a decisive third set.  Paige and Amber hung in the set for a few games, but the consistency of Willmar won out in the end as they took the final set 6-2.  This was the first outing for this doubles team and they have nothing to hang their heads about.  Tonight we saw some great things and this was a good team match for our girls.”
