Senior forward Taylor Kiss blasted a shot from the right side of the field into the left corner of the net at the 52 minute mark of Tuesday's home and season opener for the Hillcrest/Underwood girls' soccer team.  The goal, which was setup by a beautiful pass from senior midfielder Emma Abrahamsen, was the only goal of the game as the Comets blanked Crookston, 1-0.

"Despite our inexperience, our girls came out aggressive against Crookston," stated Head Coach Jeremy Mueller of the Comets.  "For the most part we controlled the ball for the majority of the game.  Outside of a few defensive missteps we successfully kept the ball out of our end of the field.  The score was much closer than the game actually was.  We had a number of good scoring opportunities, that we just were unable to convert.  Fortunately, Taylor's goal early in the second half was enough to give us the win.  Our young players held together well, but it was the consistent play of our seniors Emma Abrahamsen in the midfield and Cassandra Twedt on defense that kept us on the attack for most of the game.  Our game next Tuesday against East Grand Forks will be a much greater challenge."

Neither team was able to mount much of an offensive attack, as both teams played tight defense, resulting in several contested shots that wound up being stopped in front of the net.  Hillcrest Senior Goalie Emma Marfell wasn't challenged often, but answered the call when she was.  Freshman keeper Reese Swanson was also efficient in the Pirates net.

Hillcrest/Underwood will play their next game on Tuesday, September 8 at home against East Grand Forks.
