A year ago the Pelican Rapids boys’ soccer team was the number two seed in the Section 8A tournament and finished second in the Lakes to Prairie Conference as they recorded a record of 10-3-3.  They lost seven players from that very successful team, but also have a solid nucleus of returning letter winners to lead them in 2020.

“Although we had significant losses to the squad due to graduation and transfers, we will look to build on the success of last season,” commented Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Peter.  “We recognize we have a unique opportunity to play this fall despite the ongoing pandemic and we will look to play the game at a very high level to honor that opportunity.  We also see this as an opportunity to provide joy to our community in a time when there may not be a lot of joy outside of sports.”

Returning letter winners are seniors Khadar Ibrahim (attacking mid), Macho Said (right back), Jesus Moreno (right wing) and Mohamed Ahmed (left wing), and juniors Sebastian Centeno (holding mid), Sebastian Rosiles (center back), Josh Urbano (left back) and Lico Pedroza (center back).  Pedroza, Ibrahim and Centeno will serve as team captains this season.

Key newcomers to the varsity will be junior Chris Abarca (goalie) and freshmen Abdirahman Isse (striker) and Khadar Aden (midfield).

Andy Johnson and Rudy Martinez will assist Peter.

“Because of the pandemic, it is unknown if a section tournament or post season will happen this year so we are focused entirely on the Lakes to Prairie Conference,” added Peter.  “East Grand Forks looks to be the best team in the conference this year but as always, Detroit Lakes will also provide intense games for us and the derbies versus our former co-op partner Hillcrest will also, as always, provided an intense atmosphere.”
