Barnesville’s Sr. Babe Ruth team split league games with Hawley and swept Pelican Rapids in doubleheader Lakes Region action last week.  Barnesville will play a make-up contest with Ashby on Monday night in Barnesville (6:30) and play in the league tournament in Pelican Rapids beginning on Thursday, August 6.  Tournament pairings were incomplete when this edition went to press.

Barnesville 10 Hawley 5
Caleb Ott tossed a complete game and Barnesville bats exploded for 10 runs and 11 hits off Hawley pitchers.  Ott (2 BB, 1 K) scattered 8 hits and did not allow an earned run in the win.   Matt Samuelson’s pop up in the infield dropped between 2 players for a RBI in the bottom of the opening inning.  Hawley would even the score in the second before the home team would score 3 in the second, 2 in the third and 3 more in the fourth to run the lead to 9-2.   Adrian O’Brien (1-2, 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Samuelson (3-4, 2B, 2R, 3 RBI) each had a double in the onslaught.  Sam Askegaard and Ott also had multiple hits, while leadoff hitter Jackson Wahl (1-3, 2 SB) scored 3 runs.  Kellen Hinsz (1-3, 1 RBI) and Connor Morse (1-3) each reached base twice on singles and after been hit by a pitch.

Hawley 3 Barnesville 2
Barnesville, playing as the visitor in the second game, was limited to just 3 hits in the 5 inning game and a costly two out error in the bottom of the fourth led to the winning run for Hawley.  Matt Haugrud pitched 4 strong innings, giving up just 4 hits and striking out 5.  O’Brien again was a leader on offense, punching out a couple of base hits in 3 plate appearances.  Haugrud had the only other hit.  Barnesville dropped to 8-6-1 in league play.

On Senior Night and with all 9 seniors in the starting lineup, the home team batted 15 times in the opening inning to plate 9 runs and would run away with a 5 inning 15-3 win over Pelican Rapids.  Every starter in the lineup would post a base hit, with Connor Morse (2-2, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Blake Torfin (2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) adding extra base hits doubles.  Wahl, O’Brien and Haugrud would also had 2 singles each and contribute an RBI, while Samuelson and Hinsz’ base hits each plated 2 RBI.  Morse (2 Innings, 0 hits, 2 BB, 5 K) would earn the win, while O’Brien (2.2 Inn, 7 BB, 4 K) and Noah Krause (0.1 Inn, 1 K) would close out the game.

Barnesville 1 Pelican Rapids
Once again the second game saw bats go quiet and Barnesville would squeak out a 1-0 win in a game shortened to 4 innings due to weather.  Matt Samuelson reached base on a throwing error in the fourth inning and pinch runner Joaquin Nelson would score from third on Sam Askegaard’s bloop single over first base for the only run of the game.  Morse (4 inn, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K) would notch his second win on the night.  Barnesville is now 10-6-1 in Lakes Region Sr. Babe Ruth.
