Barnesville came from a six-run deficit to defeat Breckenridge 8-6 in Senior Babe Ruth Baseball action on Wednesday night.

Breckenridge jumped out to an early lead, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Base hits by Carson Hought, Max Johnson, Connor Twidwell, Carter Haugen, Jeremy Stack and Brayden Wahl and a second hit by Hought in the inning, brought six runs across the plate.  All but one of those hits came with two outs in the inning.

Like the night before, Breck was cruising along with Haugen on the mound until the fifth inning when Barnesvilled picked up their first run.  In the sixth inning Barnesville collected a pair of hits and received a pair of walks.  That led to Jace Hegge coming on in relief of Haugen.  After another walk, a hit batter and two wild pitches, Barnesville closed the gap to 6-5.

Breckenridge had opportunities in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and in the sixth with men on second and third but couldn’t get the key hit to score a run.

In the top of the seventh with two outs and no one on and a one run lead, it appeared as though Breck was going to escape with the victory.  With a 1-2 count the Barnesville hitter reached on a single.  The next two batters walked to load the bases.  Ty Piechowski was brought in to try to close the game, however, an infield grounder was misplayed and the tying run scored.  Two more walks gave Barnesville an 8-6 lead before Jake Wendorff came in to get the final out.  Breckenridge went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning, taking a heartbreaking loss.

Breckenridge pitchers issued nine walks and had three wild pitches in the game.  “That has been our struggle all season,” commented Coach Kevin Hiedeman.  “Most of those mistakes came in the sixth and seventh innings.  In spite of that, we’ve had opportunities to still win but have failed to make the plays defensively.  On the positive side we had nine hits, led by Carson Hought and Connor Twidwell.”

Hought had two hits and drove in a run.  He also had 9 putouts in left field with three of them being “great catches”, according to Hiedeman.

Breckenridge travels to Pelican Rapids for two games on Friday.
