Breckenridge suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to conference rival DGF on the last play of the game Tuesday night.

Breckenridge jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Emmit Vig singled to start the game followed by a base on balls by Jeremy Stack. Carson Hought singled scoring Vig and Stack.

Jared Aamold led off the second inning reaching on a hit by pitch. Derrick Zietlow singled, Jace Hegge came in to courtesy run and scored on a fielders’ choice by Vig.

After the 2nd inning Breckenridge failed to score another run but not for lack of opportunities stranding 8 runners in the game and they had a runner in scoring position every inning.

Connor Twidwell started on the mound and threw a great game through 5 innings. “We made some defensive changes to start the game with Zietlow at shortstop, Aamold at first and Vig at 3rd and our defense played perfect through 5 innings,” noted Coach Kevin Hiedeman. “In the 6th inning we walked the lead-off batter and gave up a couple hits but still had an opportunity to get out of the inning with a lead. After fielding the ball cleanly it was thrown to the wrong base committing our first error of the game, allowing the tying run to score in the inning. Vig came on in relief in the 7th and again we walked the lead-off batter. DGF sacrificed him to 2nd - moving to 3rd on a ground out. The clean-up hitter was intentionally walked and with two outs and a tie in the 7th, we got what we wanted - a routine ground ball to 3rd but we failed to make the play committing a throwing error allowing the winning run to score.”

Carson Hought led the offense with two hits followed with singles by Vig, Collin Roberts, Zietlow and Twidwell.

“This was a tough one to lose because we played one of the better games of the season,” said Hiedeman. “We outhit DGF 6-3, did a much better job throwing strikes even though we still walked 5 batters. We only struck out 2 batters which means we had 20 put outs in the game. It’s just that those walks came at the wrong time and failed to make a couple plays in a key part of the game. Other than the final score, we outplayed DGF most of the game.”

Breckenridge will try to rebound from the loss with a game Wednesday night against Barnesville at 6:30pm in Breckenridge.
