Breckenridge played an undefeated Bismarck team in the first game of the Post 400 tournament in West Fargo and handed them their first loss of the season with a 6-5 victory.  They lost their second game to the Fargo Jets, 15-5, and then lost to the Fargo Vets 3-1 in their final game on Sunday.

Against Bismarck the Breckenridge bats in the top of the order continued to stay hot.  Breckenridge had 11 hits with five of them coming from the duo of Jeremy Stack and Emmit VigCarter Haugen had his best start of the season, going six innings and giving up one earned run.  He struck out 3 and walked 4.

“Our defense continues to struggle a little bit, making five errors in the game,” commented Coach Kevin Hiedeman.  “We also continue to walk too many batters, but we continued the battle and found a way to pick up a victory.”

In the loss to Fargo Jets, Stack, Brayden Wahl and Carson Hought each had two hits.  Breckenridge had a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning but walks keyed the Fargo comeback.

“We hit the ball well,” acknowledged Hiedeman, “but the same thing that has plagued us all year popped up again.  Our pitchers walked or hit ten batters in six innings and the defense made four errors.  Most of these came with men on base.  It’s not a winning formula for baseball.  If you put that many guys on base you’re going to have a difficult time winning a baseball game.”

Breckenridge was held to just three hits in the loss to the Fargo Vets on Sunday.  Stack had two of them and Vig had the third.  Breckenridge again issued seven batters, while hitting three more.  Three of the walks an done hit batter occurred in the fourth inning, allowing two runs to score and giving the Vets the lead.

“We played a much better defensive game, committing only one error,” noted Hiedeman.  “We turned a big double play with the bases loaded to get out of another inning.  We are doing a lot of things right.  Jack Aigner has done a fabulous job behind the plate, throwing out runners.  The top of our order is really hitting the ball well and running the bases well.  Derrick Zietlow stepped up at shortstop and made some great plays, and Emmit Vig and Carter Haugen both did a great job on the mound.  Winning baseball games is about throwing strikes, playing good defense, and doing all the little things right.  I think we are really close to achieving these.”

Breckenridge is scheduled to play conference rival DGF in a road game on Tuesday at 6:30pm.
