The Fergus Falls Otters 13U baseball team played their first games in ten months as they battled Alexandria in a twin bill on Thursday night at the M-State baseball field.  The visiting Cardinals were able to go home with the sweep as they won game one 14-9 and game two 8-1.

Alexandria jumped ahead in game one with three runs in the top of the first.  The Otters responded with three runs of their own.  Aikhem Bethel led off the inning with a single.  Bethel stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Logan Larson drove in the first run for the Otters with a sharp single up the middle.  Carston Fronning singled to center to advance Larson to second.  Brock Scheuerman grounded out to the third baseman, but both runners advanced a base. Larson was able to score on a wild pitch as Fronning moved to third.  Alex Ellison's single drove in the final run of the inning.

The Otters took the lead in the second inning with two runs.  Larson started the two out rally with his second single of the game.  Fronning reached on an error that allowed Larson to get to third.  Levi King hit a ground ball to the third baseman, and his errant throw allowed the two runs to score.

Alexandria took advantage of walks, errors, and timely hits to plate 10 runs in the fourth inning to take a 13-5 lead.  The Otters could only muster one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 13-6.

The Otters scored one run in the 5th inning.  Andrew Klinnert led off with a walk.  Scheuerman hit into a fielder's choice and was replaced by courtesy runner King.  Alex Ellison walked.  Both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Jack Ratz grounded back to the pitcher and King was thrown out trying to score from third.  Jayden Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Isaac Iverson drew a walk to drive in the only run of the inning.

After a scoreless 6th inning, the Cardinals scratched a run across in the 7th inning.  The Otters' last at bat started with walks to Alex Ellison, Ratz, and Miller.  Two wild pitches allowed Ellison and Ratz to score.  Unfortunately those were the only runs the home team could muster as the game ended 14-9.

The Otters were led at the plate by Logan Larson's 2 hit game.  Bethel, Isaac Ellison, Fronning, and Alex Ellison each collected one hit.

Fronning started the game on the mound.  He pitched 3 innings and gave up 3 runs.  Isaac Ellison was not given much defensive support.  He gave up 5 runs and didn't record an out.  Bethel was the next pitcher.  He gave up 5 runs as well in his one inning of work.  Iverson didn't allow a run in his two innings of work.  Alex Ellison gave up one run in his lone inning on the mound.

Because of the length of Game 1, Game 2 was shortened to 3 innings. The Otters took the lead early with one run in the first, but the Cardinals scored the final eight runs of the game to claim an 8-1 victory.

Bethel was the only Otter player to record a hit.  He led off the first with a single, stole second, advanced to third when Larson moved him over with a sharp ground ball to the right side of the infield, and scored on a wild pitch.

Bethel started the game on the mound.  He pitched two innings and gave up seven runs.  Fronning pitched the final frame and gave up one run.

"Even though we weren't able to get a win tonight, it was great to get back out on the baseball field and play against someone with a different jersey,” commented Head Coach Kevin Pearson.  “These kids have been itching to get back to playing baseball and having some normalcy in their lives.  We definitely saw many things that we need to work on, but we also saw many quality plays that we can build upon as the season continues."
