Fergus Falls swept a U19 baseball double header in Detroit Lakes on Tuesday night, posting wins of 6-5 and 6-4.

In game one, Dustin Duenow (6IP, 8H, 5R, 5ER, 2BB, 2K) started on the mound and picked up the win.  Brock Kotschevar came on in the seventh with a runner on first and nobody out to earn the save.  Kotschevar (2-3) and Ian Stumbo (3-4, RBI) led the offensive attack.

Duenow battled all game long and he gave us a solid chance to win a ball game,” stated Head Coach Trevor Larson. “With 9 ball games this week/ weekend we knew we needed some longer starts today and Duenow did that. Brock did a nice job of coming into a tough situation and throwing strikes. With runners on first and third and one out in the bottom of the 7th Kotschevar induced a hard ground ball to Carter Thielke who backed handed it and flipped to Matt Scott who turned the 6-4-3 double play to end game one 6-5 in favor of Fergus Falls.”

Mike Maanum (7IP, 3H, 4R, 0ER, 3BB, 3K) went the distance in game two, recording his first win of the season.

“Maanum threw the ball very well for us today as he was attacking hitters with strike one often and was constantly ahead in the count,” commented Larson.  “He also sprinkled in a nice curve and change-up to keep the hitters honest.”

Offensive leaders were Nic Pearson (2-3), Michael Wiederich (2-4) and Jaydon Ollila (1-2. 2B).

Fergus Falls fell behind 4-1 after three innings after spotting DL 4 runs courtesy of five Fergus Falls errors in the third inning.  Single runs in the fourth and fifth cut the score to 4-3.  Fergus loaded the bases to start the sixth but the next two batters struck out.  Ollila on an 0-1 count stole home to tie the game at 4-4 and a Pearson single gave the visitors the lead for good.

“It is always nice to come home with two wins,” concluded Larson.  “We had one very bad inning but the boys battled and responded right away.  We knew going into this week that we would need our starters to step up and eat some innings and both Duenow and Maanum did that fantastically.  Offensively, along with our base running, we are still a bit off, but trending in the right direction.”

Fergus Falls continues a busy week with two games on Thursday in Moorhead, before leaving for a 3-day tournament in Jamestown that will see them play either four or five games.
