Matt McGovern is in his third year as Head coach of the Fergus Falls boys’ golf team.  The Otters are coming off a fourth place finish in the Central Lakes Conference and a in Section 8AA competition a year ago.  Former Otter Aaron Shelstad has moved on to UM-Crookston to begin his college golfing career.

The Otters return a solid nucleus for 2020, led by seniors Hayden Shol and Trey Soydara, junior Chance Fazio and freshman Charlie Fuder.  Shol and Soydara will serve as team captains for the 2020 season.

McGovern is looking for varsity contributions from a mix of young golfers including freshman Aiden Swenson, and eighth-graders Davis Shol, Ryan Nelson, Riley McGovern and Sam Dirkman.

“I’m really excited about this team,” said Coach McGovern.  “We will have a great mix of experienced players and younger players.  Our two captains are both excellent players and have a real shot at making it to the state tournament this year.  We also have some strong underclassmen that will see some varsity time this year which is a real bright spot for this team’s future.”

McGovern, who will be assisted by Travis Johnson and Trevor Larson, sees Detroit Lakes as the team to beat in Section 8AA and Alexandria as the top team in the CLC.
