An unassisted goal by Caleb Strong with just three minutes remaining in regulation time, carried the Alexandria Cardinals boys’ hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Fergus Falls on Monday night. Fergus Falls had 35 shots on goal, compared to 25 for the Cardinals.
Alexandria got off to a 2-0 lead in the first period as Strong scored at the 6:09 mark with assists going to Andrew Revering and Joe Westlund. Strong and Josiah Gronholz then assisted on Matthew Carlsen’s power play goal at 11:27.
Westlund gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead at 8:57 of the second period, assisted by Derek Pesta. Fergus Falls then had a flurry of goals to end period number two with the game even at 3-3. The Otters first goal, at 12:38, came from Cole Zierden and was assisted by Isaac Young and Colton Partain. At 13:21 Logen Schake scored from Isaac Johnson and Ian Richards. The equalizer came from Zierden at 15:02 with an assist from Richards.
Ben Swanson recorded 21 saves in the Fergus Falls net and Alexandria goaltender Landyn James had 32 stops.
