Cardinal Girls Come From Two Goals Down to Beat St. Cloud

The Alexandria girls’ hockey team overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the St. Cloud Ice Breakers 5-2 in a Central Lakes Conference contest on Thursday night at the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria.

Katherine Bell gave St. Cloud the 2-0 lead with a pair of first period goals.  Taylor Mathiasen assisted on both goals and Gabbie Rud added an assist on the second goal.  St. Cloud held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal in the initial period.  The goals were scored 18 seconds apart with under two minutes left in the period.

Alexandria took the lead with a trio of second period goals, starting with a goal by Lauren Maras, assisted by Anna Doherty at 2:56.  At 7:03 Hanley Block scored from Makenna Aure, and at 14:45 Kaci Trosvig’s goal gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game with assists from Doherty and Mayson Toft.

The Cardinals scored two seconds into the third when Trosvig notched her second of the night, assisted by Maras and Aure.  At 14:57 Doherty scored into an empty net with an assist going to Toft.

Goalie Jordan O’Kane stopped 22 of 24 St. Cloud shots on goal.  The Cardinals finished with 27 shots, outshooting the Ice Breakers 11-5 in the second period and 10-8 in the third.

Alexandria (16-6-3) finishes their regular season schedule on a four game winning streak and having won 9 of their last 10 games.
