Jayna Gronewold (29 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals, 4 assists), Abby Honer (8 points, 8 rebounds), Jenna Fabre (8 points, 5 rebounds) and Kenadi Carlsrud (6 points, 8 rebounds) led the Tigers to the victory.
Hillcrest held a 28 – 17 halftime lead, but Rothsay fought back to gain the advantage in the second half.
“Hillcrest really outplayed us in the first half with their energy,” said Rothsay Head Coach Anita Heier. “I was happy with how our girls responded in the second half with defensive pressure. It was a nice conference win for us!”
Leaders for Hillcrest were Mackenzie Foss (19 pts, 4 assists, 3 steals), Madi Foss (8 pts, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals), Anna Rasmussen (8 pts, 7 rebounds, 2 assists), Molly McGuire (5 pts, 7 rebounds) and Cassy Twedt (4 pts, 3 steals).
“Tonight was a great team effort,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Hannah Clark. “We moved the ball well on offense and we were finding the open girl for high percentage shots. Mackenzie did a nice job getting into the lane and she made great decisions on when to pass to a teammate and when to take the shot herself. We had a stretch in the second half where we were careless with the basketball and it led to too many easy transition buckets for Rothsay. We executed our defensive plan in the half court, but unfortunately gave up too many offensive rebounds that led to second chance points.”
Rothsay (3-9) will play at Underwood on Friday night, while Hillcrest (0-7) has a home game against Battle Lake.
