Knights down Warroad in Holiday Tournament

The West Central Area Knights won their first game in the Pelican Rapids Holiday tournament with a 68-54 win over the Warroad Warriors on Friday.  The Knights started the game 4-20 from the field and found themselves down 26-29 at the half before outscoring the Warriors 42-25 in the second half.

The Knights had a lot of individuals with good second halves that contributed to their win.  Grant Beuckens had 22 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists; Jack VanKempen had 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists; Brady Reeve had 9 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds; Gage Staples had 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots; Jacob Bright had an extraordinary game for the Knights with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 5 steals; Blake Koloski had 4 points, 4 steals, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds; Ryder Staples had 1 point and 3 rebounds; Tate Christenson contributed 2 steals, 2 assists and a rebound.

Warroad was led by Virgil Laznicka with 15 points, Tyler Fox with 12, Evan Grover 6, Cole Spenst 6, Jeremy Cole 6, Jace Thompson 4, Daniel Rose 3, and Kyle Thompson 2.

The Knights shot 24-57 from the field for 42% for the game and hit 13-18 free throws for 72%.  The Warriors shot 24-50 for 48% and hit 5-7 free throws.  The Warriors held a 35-32 rebound advantage and they had 13 turnovers to only 7 for the Knights.

"Great second half by our guys," said Knight Coach Kraig Hunter. "We did a much better job of getting post ups and getting to the basket. It helped our field goal percentage and also helped us get to the free throw line."
