New Ulm goalie Joey Gag stopped all 32 shots he faced on Thursday night as the Eagles shutout the Fergus Falls Otters by the score of 6-0 in the opening round of the Fergus Falls Holiday Classic.

“We got off to a slow start but played a good second period and a good third period,” said Head Coach Mike Donaghue of the Otters.  “We just couldn’t find a way to solve their goal as he played very well.”

New Ulm took a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Teddy Giefer, from Ethan O’Connor and Kyden Wenisch, and Braxten Hoffmann, assisted by Glavin Schugel.

In the second period, Nolan Drill scored from Keagan Schiro and Giefer assisted on a goal by Hunter Hulke, giving New Ulm a 4-0 lead.

Wenisch made it 5-0 at 12:25 of the third from O’Connor and Josh Gulden, and the final goal of the game came at 15:09 from Schugel, assisted by AJ Arneson.

Ben Swanson stopped 23 of 29 shots in the Otter net.

Fergus Falls will face West Fargo at 7:00pm Friday.  The Packers won their first game of the tournament, beating Detroit Lakes 3-0.

The Saturday schedule has been adjusted due to the impending winter storm.  West Fargo and New Ulm will play their JV game at 10:00am Saturday, followed by the varsity contest at 12:00 noon.  The Otter JV team will face Detroit Lakes at 2:00pm with the two varsity teams squaring off at 4:00pm.
