Cardinals Post Overtime Win in Boys Hockey

The Alexandria boys’ hockey team defeated St. Cloud 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday night at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud.

A power play goal by Max Rud, setup by Sean Davidson and Sam Oster, spotted St. Cloud a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game.  Matthew Carlsen scored from Joe Westlund at 16:29, bringing Alexandria into a 1-1 tie.

In the second period, Tanner Simonson gave St. Cloud a 2-1 lead with assists from Derek Herrington and Eric Warner.  Carlsen’s second goal of the night, assisted by Westlund and Caleb Strong tied the game at 2-2 at 8:30 of the period.

Strong notched a power play goal from Westlund and Derek Pesta at 2:44 of the third to put Alexandria ahead 3-2.  St. Cloud tied the game at 10:25 when Luke Johnson scored from August Falloon and Blake Keller.

The Cardinals got the game winner at 3:10 of overtime when Josiah Gronholz scored short handed.

Alexandria goalie Christopher Loken stopped 23 shots on goal and the Cardinals had 23 shots in the game.
