Battle Lake recorded a 52-43 Little Eight Conference girls’ basketball victory in Ashby on Tuesday night.

“We fell behind early by as much as 10 points, but a late first half rally cut the lead to only 4 by the break, 25-29 in favor of Ashby,” reported Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso.  “In the second half our defense played really tough and held the Arrows to only 14 points, while we were able to get some baskets in transition and score 27 points.  It was a very good defensive effort all night and we found some offense that we have been lacking.”

Leaders for Battle Lake were Halie Johnson with 17 points and Grace VanErp with 13.  Tessa Kortlever added 8 points.

“We couldn’t hold off the charging Battlers in the final 18 minutes of playing time,” said Ashby Head Coach Alan Niemann.

Fouls turned out to be the downfall for the Lady Arrows as they led the visitors in that ominous category by a tally of 22 to 10. As a result, the Battlers outscored the Arrows by 15 points from the charity stripe.

“On the bright side, thanks to cousins Courtney and Catherine Koefod, the Arrows were a perfect 5 for 5 on free throws for the evening,” reported Coach Niemann.  “Unfortunately, the Battlers shot 32 freebies sinking 20 of them to account for the 15 point difference from the free throw line.”

Ashby Senior Captains Kalista Aamot and Courtney Koefod led the team in scoring with a dozen each followed closely by Catherine Koefod with 10.
