The West Central Area Lady Knights hosted the Breckenridge Cowgirls on Friday night in a non-conference girls’ basketball battle. The game was back and forth until a mini run gave the Knights a 5 point lead.  It would grow to 7 points with 5 minutes to play in the first half.  The Cowgirls responded and tied the game up before the end of the first half.  The second half began back and forth, but quickly after the first few minutes the Cowgirls built an 11 point lead.  The Lady Knights clawed their way back into the game and trailed 43-41.  With a huge 3 pointer, clutch rebounds and late free-throws the Knights prevailed 46-43.

“The game had everything in it and it was an exhilarating 36 minutes of action,” said Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer of the Knights.

The Lady Knights were led by Lexi Bright with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.  Brynn Fernholz put in 9 points, nabbed 4 balls on defense, 3 helpers and 2 pulled down 2 rebounds.  Kaitlyn Hansen had 8 points, 2 rebounds and a steal.  Teagan Nelson had 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals and an assist.  Liz Rustan had 4 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Hailey Bennett had 3 points, 2 steals and an assist.  Kaylyn Ulrich had 2 points, 3 rebounds and a steal.  Kennedy Ulrich had 2 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and a steal.  Ireland Winter and Halle Foslien each had a rebound.

“Tonight everyone’s contribution added to our team success,” Coach Schoenbauer said and then he added, “There were so many little things players did to help us tonight that will never get the recognition they deserve.  Brooke Anderson boxing out each possession she was in, Ireland and Halle playing significant minutes in a highly contested game, Kennedy playing poised on offense and finding advantages, Teagan playing all but 2 minutes in the second half and hard, Lexi playing smart with foul trouble and hitting clutch free-throws, Kaitlyn playing hard in the game but also picking us up when she was out, Hailey not having one turnover while handling the ball a lot throughout the game, Brynn pulling the trigger confidently late in the game, and Liz attacking rebounds to preserve a win.  I’m very proud of the entire team, because there were plenty of reasons to feel sorry for ourselves but none of the reasons were apparent tonight.”

No Breckenridge stats were reported.
